Panniyur-7 in detail
Open-pollinated selection from Kalluvally IV, released in 2000. Panniyur-7 is a vigorous, hardy vine with regular bearing, long spikes and high piperine, suited to Kerala's open and partially shaded pepper tracts.
Origin & story
Panniyur-7 is an open-pollinated progeny selection from Kalluvally type IV pepper, released by the Pepper Research Station, Panniyur under Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) in 2000. The Pepper Research Station was started in 1952 and upgraded to research station status under KAU in 1972, and a series of improved Panniyur black pepper selections has come out of its breeding work.
How it grows
Panniyur-7 is a vigorous, hardy and regular-bearing type recommended for Kerala under both open and partially shaded conditions. The vines carry long spikes and bear consistently. Average yield is about 1,410 kg dry pepper per hectare, with potential yield reaching around 2,770 kg/ha under good management. The variety shows good adaptability to mixed cropping with coconut and arecanut, and does best on well-drained, fertile soils.
Quality & character
Long spikes carrying bold berries distinguish Panniyur-7, and the shoot tips show light purple pigmentation. It is noted for high piperine content, which gives good pungency suited to both domestic and export use.
Why it matters to buyers
The variety appeals to growers and buyers as a reliable yielder with tolerance to Phytophthora foot rot under good management, plus bold berries and high piperine that suit export-grade requirements. Its regular bearing habit helps steady year-to-year supply, and its adaptability to mixed cropping with coconut and arecanut fits smallholder systems across Kerala.

The ancient cultivars like Karimunda, Kottanadan, and Narayakodi remain the anchor, each rooted in its own stretch of humid…
