Pepper Thekkan in detail

A farmer-selected high-yield black pepper from Idukki with uniquely branched spikes that pack 800-1000 berries each, and grafted onto a wilt-tolerant rootstock for resistance to quick wilt disease.

Origin & story

Discovered and developed by T.T. Thomas, a farmer from Idukki, Kerala, who noticed an unusual branched pepper plant in the forest about 25 years ago and began cultivating it. Thomas grafted this plant onto Pepper Colubrinum rootstock — a wilt-tolerant wild pepper originating from Brazil — to give it resistance to quick wilt. The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Calicut recognized it as a unique high-yielding variety with rare branching. Thomas has distributed more than 5,000 grafts within Kerala and over 1,000 grafts outside the state, mainly in Goa and Karnataka. The variety was recognized by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), and Thomas participated in the President's House innovation exhibition in 2011.

How it grows

Grown in Idukki district of Kerala. Propagated through grafting on Pepper Colubrinum rootstock. Because of the wilt-tolerant rootstock, the variety is reported to resist quick wilt, a major fungal threat in the region. Reported potential yield is around 8,600 kg of dry pepper per hectare, though these production figures come largely from the developer and have not been independently verified.

Quality & character

Highly branched spikes with 800-1000 berries per spike versus 60-80 in locally popular varieties. Berries are carried on increased lateral branches with more nodes and internodes. The berries have a thin epidermis and negligible air cavity, which is said to enhance dry weight. Bold berries with dense spikes compared to local landraces.

Why it matters to buyers

Growers and traders take interest in Thekkan for its high berry count per spike and the dry-weight benefit attributed to the negligible air cavity, as well as the quick-wilt tolerance from its rootstock. Yield claims should be treated with caution, since the headline production figures are largely from the developer and some observers have questioned them. Worth evaluating for commercial cultivation where quick wilt is a concern.

About black pepper

India's pepper tapestry splits into two worlds—old landraces born from the Western Ghats soil and careful farmer selection over generations, and modern releases from KAU Panniyur and ICAR-IISR that blend tradition with yield ambition. The ancient cultivars like Karimunda, Kottanadan, and Narayakodi remain the anchor, each rooted in its own stretch of humid…
