Idukki High-Range Type in detail
Farmer-maintained landrace from Idukki's high-range homesteads, valued for bold seed and well-developed, whole mace blades in cool, wet conditions.
How it grows
Grown in Idukki district at roughly 600-900 m elevation in the high ranges of the Western Ghats. It suits areas with high annual rainfall (around 2,500 mm) and the district's cooler temperatures. Traditionally raised from seed in homestead shade systems, interspersed with crops such as pepper, cardamom, and clove. Being dioecious, plantings carry both male and female trees, with little formal selection applied in traditional homestead practice.
Quality & character
Seed-raised populations show variable nut size (dry nut weight in Kerala nutmeg has been recorded from about 3 g to 15 g), but Idukki selections tend toward bold, heavier seeds. Mace generally develops as bright, whole blades covering the seed coat, which growers regard as a hallmark of the type.
Why it matters to buyers
Bold nuts and whole, well-coloured mace blades tend to attract better interest from spice traders, with whole-blade mace generally valued above broken or partial mace. The type is often grown by traditional, chemical-free methods in Idukki's cooler, wetter climate, which can support organic and natural-farming positioning in domestic and export markets.
