GKVK-17 in detail
Elite tamarind clone selected from 11-year trials showing consistent high-yielding performance and heavy fruit-bearing suited to Southern Karnataka.
Origin & story
Released in 2020 by the Division of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore (UAS-GKVK), with the Agricultural Research Station at Chintamani. The clone emerged from an evaluation programme beginning in 2003-04 that compared seventeen tamarind clones. Over 11 years (2003-04 to 2013-14) GKVK-17 recorded a cumulative yield of 1109 kg/tree, against 383 kg/tree for the check clone GKVK-6.
How it grows
Recommended for the Southern region of Karnataka. Heavy-bearing, regular-fruiting clone with an average yield of about 100 kg/tree across the trial years. Selected for high cumulative productivity over an extended bearing cycle, which makes it suited to commercial planting in adapted areas.
Quality & character
Regular bearing habit, which tends to reduce season-to-season yield swings compared with alternate-bearing types.
Why it matters to buyers
Cumulative yield over the trial period was close to three times that of the standard check clone GKVK-6. Regular bearing supports more predictable annual harvests. Recommended for Southern Karnataka growers seeking stable, high-volume production.
