Goma Prateek in detail
Goma Prateek is a semi-dwarf, early-bearing tamarind released by CIAH Bikaner in 2009, suited to rainfed conditions in semi-arid western India and flowering by the 4th year.
Origin & story
Released by the Central Institute for Arid Horticulture (CIAH), Bikaner, in 2009, under ICAR's arid/semi-arid horticulture program.
How it grows
Semi-dwarf, spreading habit. Short juvenile period of 3-4 years, with early flowering in the 4th year. A regular bearer rather than alternate-cropping, suited to rainfed, semi-arid conditions. Grafted plants begin bearing earlier than seedling trees, which typically take much longer to come into production.
Quality & character
Pod length about 16.7 cm with roughly 50.5% pulp. Pulp is brownish-red, with high TSS (71 degrees Brix), high reducing sugars (about 27.3%), acidity around 14.1%, and vitamin C near 17.5 mg/100g. The pulp is suited to processing.
Why it matters to buyers
The pulp's high TSS and reducing-sugar profile makes it suitable for processing. Early flowering and regular cropping can simplify harvest planning compared with alternate-bearing landraces, and rainfed suitability fits water-scarce growing zones.
