Gujarat Ajwain-3 in detail
A high-yield ajwain released from SDAU, Gujarat in 2024, notable for bold, uniform seed and enhanced pungency.
Origin & story
Gujarat Ajwain-3 (GA-3) was developed and tested at Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University (SDAU) at Jagudan, Gujarat, under the AICRP on Spices. It went through multi-location testing—six trials at Jagudan and coordinated varietal trials across seven locations including Jobner, Ajmer, Guntur, Hisar, Kumarganj, and Raigardh—before being released in 2024 by the Prime Minister alongside 108 other crop varieties. It is recommended for Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
How it grows
Ajwain is generally sown in October–November during the cool, dry season. GA-3 is suited to dry tracts and is a medium-duration variety. Across India the crop is typically grown on well-drained, fertile soil with seed rates of roughly 3–4 kg/ha. In SDAU trials GA-3 averaged about 1035 kg/ha seed yield.
Quality & character
Seeds are bold and uniformly sized with an attractive khaki-green colour. Test weight is about 1.15 g, superior to older checks. The plant is medium-leafy with green foliage and bears a greater number of umbels per plant and seeds per umbel. Aroma is notably more pungent than the national checks AA-1 and AA-2, with enhanced volatile oil quality.
Why it matters to buyers
GA-3 yields 12.9% more seed than the national check AA-1 and 4.5% more than AA-2, which affects farmer returns. Bold, uniform seed size and attractive colour help with market appeal where consistency and appearance matter. The more pungent aroma and enhanced oil quality suit buyers looking for higher-potency seed.
