Botanical Type: High Thymol Content Germplasm in detail
A collection of thymol-rich germplasm lines from ICAR-NRCSS's Ajmer repository, selected and characterized for high essential oil thymol content—exceeding 65% in premium accessions—making them suitable material for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food-grade extraction.
Origin & story
This germplasm group comes from ICAR-NRCSS Ajmer's conservation and characterization programme, which maintains around 2250 ajwain accessions from diverse geographic origins across India. Essential oil profiling during the 2010s–2020s identified specific lines—notably Ajmer Ajwain-1 (about 67.79% thymol) and LTa-26 (about 50.06% thymol)—as superior for commercial quality.
How it grows
High-thymol germplasm lines are grown mainly in Rajasthan and Gujarat under both irrigated and rainfed conditions. Studies indicate that nitrogen level can influence thymol concentration in the oil, so fertiliser management is balanced for both yield and oil quality. LTa-26 has been reported to perform consistently across multi-year genotype evaluations.
Quality & character
Essential oil content 4.6–5.17%, with thymol dominating the volatile profile (roughly 50–68% depending on accession). Secondary compounds include p-cymene, γ-terpinene, and α-pinene. Seeds are dark olive-green to brown with the characteristic ridged fruit surface, and bold, uniform seed morphology supports premium grading and sortex sorting.
Why it matters to buyers
Pharmaceutical formulators, essential oil refiners, and feed manufacturers favour these accessions for extraction of high-thymol oil (>65%), which can reduce purification effort. Thymol from high-quality germplasm is used in oral-care, nutraceutical, and food-preservation segments. India is a leading global producer of thymol and ajwain oil, positioning domestically-bred high-thymol germplasm as competitive raw material; organic certification can add a price premium for certified growers.
About ajwain
Ajwain—the heat-packed seeds of *Trachyspermum ammi*—remains a defining seed spice across India, with Gujarat accounting for roughly 33% of national production, followed closely by Rajasthan (28%) and Madhya Pradesh (27%), together representing nearly 90% of India's output. Over five decades, ICAR institutes like NRCSS Ajmer and regional research stations…
