GC-1 (Gujarat Cumin-1) in detail
An early improved variety from Gujarat that combines erect, manageable plant architecture with tolerance to the major cumin diseases, making it a practical choice for growers.
Origin & story
GC-1 was released by the Spices Research Station at Jagudan, Gujarat in 1988. It was developed by Gujarat Agricultural University through recurrent single parent selection. It was one of the earlier varieties in the Gujarat Cumin series.
How it grows
GC-1 reaches maturity in 105-110 days with an average yield of about 7.0 quintals per hectare. The variety is grown in Gujarat and Rajasthan, India's main cumin-producing states. Plants show an erect, upright growth habit that facilitates harvesting.
Quality & character
Plants are erect with pink flowers. Seeds are bold, linear-oblong, and ash-brown in colour, of medium grain size. The variety has a volatile oil content of 3.6%.
Why it matters to buyers
GC-1 is valued by growers in Gujarat and Rajasthan for its tolerance to wilt, blight, and powdery mildew, the major fungal diseases affecting cumin in India. This disease tolerance helps reduce crop losses. Its erect plant form aids harvesting. Yields of about 7.0 q/ha made it a reliable commercial variety after release.
