GC-2 (Gujarat Cumin-2) in detail
Released by Gujarat Agricultural University in 1991, GC-2 is a bushy cumin variety with good branching and attractive brownish-grey seeds. It is one of the older Gujarat releases and is known to be susceptible to cumin wilt.
Origin & story
GC-2 (Gujarat Cumin-2) was developed by Gujarat Agricultural University at the Spices Research Station in Jagudan, Gujarat, and released in 1991.
How it grows
GC-2 matures in about 100 to 105 days, with a reported yield of around 822 kg per hectare. The plants are bushy with a strong branching habit. Its intermediate maturity gives some flexibility in planting windows.
Quality & character
Medium-sized seeds with a distinctive brownish-grey colour and attractive appearance, on bushy plants with good branching. It is documented as susceptible to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cumini (cumin wilt), the major fungal disease of the crop in India.
Why it matters to buyers
GC-2 is a long-standing variety in north Gujarat with commercially acceptable seed quality and appearance. Because it is wilt-susceptible, growers in wilt-prone areas may prefer wilt-resistant alternatives such as GC-4, which research reports as resistant with higher yields. GC-2's yield is moderate compared with more recent releases.
