Arka Khyati in detail
A CMS-based F1 hybrid from ICAR-IIHR that pairs a short crop duration with steady fresh and dry yields, and has been demonstrated in northeastern India where its early maturity suits quick turnover.
Origin & story
Arka Khyati is a cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) based F1 hybrid developed at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, from the cross IHR 3905 (CGMS) x IHR 3310. It was recommended for national release in 2002 at the AICRP (All India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops) workshop.
How it grows
Arka Khyati is adapted to Southern and North Eastern agroclimates and completes its cycle in about 180 days. Plants are tall and spreading. In a field assessment in Dima Hasao district, Assam (2019-2021), it reached around 78 cm plant height, flowered at about 48 days, and reached 50% fruit ripening by roughly 106 days. Fresh-market yield is reported at 40-45 t/ha, with dry yield of 5-5.5 t/ha. It is tolerant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV). Growers value it for early maturity and short turnaround, and it has been taken up by farmers in the northeast.
Quality & character
Fruits measure about 12 x 1 cm, light green ripening to deep red, and are low to medium in pungency. The skin is smooth initially and wrinkles after drying. In the Assam assessment, fruit length was around 12.05 cm and individual fruit weight about 6.45 g.
Why it matters to buyers
Buyers should note the short 180-day cycle and early, predictable dry-down, which support quick turnaround in regions with a long growing season. The hybrid has been demonstrated and adopted by farmers in Manipur and Assam. As a CMS-based hybrid, seed is produced using cytoplasmic male sterile female lines.
About dry red chilli
India grows chillies across a spectrum of heat levels, colours, and purposes—from the mild, deep-red Byadgi prized for oleoresin and paprika, to the searingly hot Bhut Jolokia of Assam's Northeast. Between these extremes sit dozens of released varieties from ICAR institutes (IIHR Bengaluru, IARI Delhi) and state universities, plus landraces and regional…
