LCA-620 in detail
LCA-620 is a pure-line, non-hybrid dry red chilli from HRS Guntur suited to export and domestic markets, yielding 65-68 quintals per hectare with medium-long pods and reliably high dry weight.
Origin & story
LCA-620 was developed by the Horticulture Research Station (HRS), Lam, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and approved through the All India Coordinated Research (AICR) programme. Press coverage from 2014 reports its release around that time, which differs from the baseline note of the early 2000s, so the exact development year is not firmly settled. Field trials in Karimnagar, Telangana ran for three consecutive years from 2016-17 to 2018-19, comparing it against the Teja control.
How it grows
Grown in the Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh and trialled in Telangana. In farmer-field trials it yielded 9.6% more than the Teja control with 4.5% lower production costs. Reported average yield is 65-68 quintals per hectare. Pods measure 9.6±1.1 cm in length with notably high dry fruit weight. Fruits retain a brick-red colour at maturity for two to three months even when left unharvested. A non-hybrid variety suited to both smallholder and commercial cultivation.
Quality & character
Medium-long pods averaging 9.6±1.1 cm. Pungency recorded at 50,000-55,000 Scoville Heat Units (highly pungent). Brick-red colour with strong colour retention after drying. High dry fruit weight relative to the control, making it economically efficient for dry chilli production.
Why it matters to buyers
Returns 28.6% higher net profit than the Teja control thanks to the yield gain and lower input costs, with a benefit-cost ratio of 2.3 versus 1.96 for Teja. Its non-hybrid status reduces seed cost and allows farmers to retain seed. Fruit length and dry weight suit export-grade specifications, and the colour retention and pungency level are commercially valued for both whole chilli and powder in domestic and international markets.
About dry red chilli

Between these extremes sit dozens of released varieties from ICAR institutes (IIHR Bengaluru, IARI Delhi) and state universities, plus landraces and regional…
