Gujarat Fennel-12 (GF-12) in detail
Gujarat Fennel-12 delivers higher seed yield than predecessor varieties while maintaining strong stability across seasons and environments, and its resistance to lodging makes mechanical harvest practical.
Origin & story
Released by Gujarat Agricultural University's Spice Research Centre at Jagudan, the long-running fennel breeding centre in North Gujarat. The earlier GF-1 was released in 1985 through pure line selection from local germplasm; GF-12 came later from the same breeding program and was recommended for release at the national level during an AICRP workshop on spices held at Coimbatore.
How it grows
Grown in the rabi (winter) season in Gujarat under irrigated conditions. The variety produces a greater number of primary and secondary branches and numerous umbels per plant, and its seed yield stays stable across seasons and environments. Its firm, lodging-resistant stand supports mechanical harvesting.
Quality & character
Bushy plants that stand firm against lodging, with uniform branch architecture, consistent umbel production per plant, and dependable seed yield even across variable seasons and farm conditions. Reported as superior to GF-1, GF-2, and GF-11 in growth and yield parameters.
Why it matters to buyers
GF-12's lodging resistance enables mechanical harvest, which can reduce labour and spoilage. Its recommendation for national release at an AICRP spices workshop reflects evaluation through India's coordinated research network. Combined with stable, high seed yield, this makes it a dependable choice for buyers sourcing fennel from Gujarat.
