Rajasthan Bold-Seed Type (Regional)
Also known as Rajasthan fennel, Nagaur bold type, Sirohi fennel
Rajasthan (major districts: Nagaur, Sirohi, Jodhpur, Pali, Swai Madhopur) · Farmer selection over generations
Bold seeds adapted to Rajasthan's arid climate. Grown predominantly in Nagaur district (estimated 10,000 ha alone). Important commercial type contributing approximately 90% of Rajasthan's fennel output. Semi-arid soil and climate conditions produce seeds with strong essential oil character.

Rajasthan Bold-Seed Type (Regional) in detail
Nagaur and surrounding districts of Rajasthan are among India's leading fennel-producing areas, with bold, high-oil seeds adapted to the state's arid climate.
Origin & story
Fennel cultivation in Rajasthan, particularly Nagaur, Sirohi, Jodhpur and Pali districts, has evolved through farmer selection over generations. The region's semi-arid conditions favour drought-adapted plants with larger seeds and stronger essential oil character. While formal research varieties such as Ajmer Fennel-3 emerged from ICAR's National Research Centre on Seed Spices in Ajmer, the dominant commercial fennel of Nagaur reflects long-term farmer practice rather than a single documented breeding effort.
How it grows
Rajasthan and Gujarat together account for the large majority of India's fennel production, and Nagaur district alone occupies roughly 10,000 hectares. The rabi-season crop suits the state's semi-arid, low-rainfall environment: around 50–75 mm rainfall is considered optimal, and temperatures of 15–25°C support good yields. Soils are neutral to alkaline (pH 6.5–8.0), well-drained loamy types. Harvest occurs about 180 days after sowing, typically April–May, with umbels plucked when mature but still green to limit shattering loss. In a saline-water irrigation trial in Rajasthan, yields of about 9 quintals per hectare were achieved.
Quality & character
Seeds are notably bold (larger than standard grades), oblong, and retain a vibrant green colour at harvest, traits that lead to Extra Bold or Bold grading in commercial trade. In a study of fennel genotypes grown in semi-arid India, essential oil yield ranged from 1.51 to 2.02%, with twenty-one constituents identified spanning terpenic hydrocarbons, ethers, alcohols and aldehydes. The arid-region growing conditions are associated with a pronounced essential-oil character in the seeds.
Why it matters to buyers
Bold fennel from Rajasthan is among the higher-value seed-spice grades in Indian markets. Buyers favour the large seed size and vibrant green appearance, which are taken as signals of quality. The crop is an important part of Rajasthan's seed-spice economy and a significant cash crop for smallholder and medium-scale farmers in the arid zone.
About fennel
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) has been cultivated across India for centuries, particularly in the arid and semi-arid regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan, which together account for approximately 90-96% of national production. From traditional landraces to modern released varieties bred by ICAR institutes and state agricultural universities, Indian fennel…
