Keralashree Elite Seedling Landraces

Also known as KAU-farmer varieties (multiple), superior mother trees, PVS-selected clones

Across Kerala nutmeg-growing regions (Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam); identified via Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS) surveys · Farmer-maintained landraces; identified and characterized by Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) · Surveyed 2010–2014; five varieties released as KAU-farmer varieties (exact years not specified in available literature)

PVS approach identified five superior clones from 29 mother trees based on economic yield traits (nut size, mace thickness, fruit number). Diversity reflects century-long farmer selection across Kerala's varied microclimates.

Keralashree Elite Seedling Landraces in detail

Keralashree refers to farmer-maintained nutmeg landraces from Kerala's nutmeg belt, identified and characterized through participatory selection of superior mother trees rather than a single conventional breeding programme.

Origin & story

Between 2010 and 2014, Kerala Agricultural University surveyed nutmeg-growing regions across Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Kottayam districts, using Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS) to identify superior trees from 29 candidate accessions. From this work, five varieties were released as KAU-farmer's varieties based on economic yield traits such as nut size, mace thickness, and fruit number. The material reflects a century of farmer selection across Kerala's varied microclimates rather than a single breeding line.

How it grows

The selected landraces are pure female with prolific flowering. Mace thickness and coverage were among the primary selection criteria. Across the surveyed trees, dry nut weight ranged from 3.27 to 15.37 g, dry mace weight from 0.35 to 4.80 g, and fruit counts from 628 to 2250 per tree per year. The study reported high heritability and genetic advance for dry mace weight (76.30%), dry kernel weight (71.37%), and fruit number per tree (73.24%), indicating these traits respond well to simple farmer selection. Suited to tropical moist, humid conditions.

Quality & character

Bold nuts with thick, entire, dark red mace — mace thickness and coverage were key selection criteria. Across the surveyed material, volatile oil in mace ranged 3.31–16.97% and oleoresin 13.00–30.50%. The oils are characteristically rich in sabinene and myrcene, with notably low myristicin and elemicin.

Why it matters to buyers

The low myristicin and elemicin alongside high sabinene and myrcene give these oils a distinctive aromatic profile for buyers seeking specific compositions. Thick, well-covering mace appeals to premium domestic and export buyers. Pure female, prolific flowering supports consistent cropping.

About mace

Mace—the lacy, crimson-to-gold aril wrapped around the nutmeg seed—comes from the same tree as nutmeg and matures in India where Kerala's humid coastal belt has cultivated it for centuries. Below are the principal Indian varieties and botanical types: released cultivars from ICAR institutes, farmer-bred selections gaining official recognition, and regional…
