Konkan Sugandha in detail

India's only hermaphrodite nutmeg, which avoids the economic waste of unproductive male trees while suiting the humid Konkan coastal belt.

Origin & story

Released by Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (DBSKKV), Fruit Research Station, Vengurla, Maharashtra in 1998. It was developed to address nutmeg's central problem: with seedling propagation, roughly half the trees turn out to be unproductive males.

How it grows

Suited to the warm, humid coastal climate of the Konkan region (Maharashtra). Trees about 15 years old produce consistently. Because each tree carries both male and female flowers, separate pollinator trees are not needed.

Quality & character

Nuts are smaller than the leading varieties Viswashree and Keralashree, but the variety remains economically viable for plantation. Its hermaphrodite flowering means every tree can bear both male and female flowers, so each tree can set fruit.

Why it matters to buyers

The main advantage is consistency: there is no land wasted on sterile male trees, since every tree can be productive. Fruit size is smaller than the premium Kerala varieties and mace yield per tree is modest, but plantation land use is more efficient than traditional mixed-sex plantings. A reasonable choice for growers in the Konkan microclimate.

Below are the principal Indian varieties and botanical types: released cultivars from ICAR institutes, farmer-bred selections gaining official recognition, and regional…
