Golsey in detail

Dzongu Golsey is a low-altitude large cardamom landrace associated with Dzongu in North Sikkim, suited to humid lower-Himalayan valleys where it yields well below higher elevations.

Origin & story

This cultivar comes out of traditional farmer selection by the Lepcha tribe of Dzongu, North Sikkim, and reflects community-led adaptation of large cardamom to local conditions. It is grown as part of Sikkim's broader heritage of large cardamom cultivation, where local nomenclature distinguishes variants like Golsey by colour type and elevation suitability.

How it grows

Dzongu Golsey is suited to elevations from below 975 m up to about 1300 m. Field study in Sikkim found it performs noticeably better at mid-elevation (975-1515 m) than at higher elevations, indicating adaptation to humid, lower Himalayan valleys. Average plant height is around 1.45 m. Across the study sites the region recorded relative humidity of roughly 57-91% and temperatures of about 11-18°C, with well-distributed annual rainfall.

Quality & character

Medium-sized capsules, around 21.35 mm in length with good seed fill (fresh capsule weight about 38.46 g). Sikkim large cardamom overall is known for a rich, aromatic character shaped by the region's climate and soil, and Golsey reflects these regional traits from lower-elevation cultivation.

Why it matters to buyers

Dzongu Golsey suits buyers wanting cardamom traceable to a named community and a traditional farmer-selection system in North Sikkim. Sikkim large cardamom is generally produced under organic methods and carries GI recognition. The cultivar's lower-altitude origin and stronger mid-elevation performance make it of interest for sourcing from specific humid microclimates rather than higher-altitude operations.
