Madhusey in detail
Madhusey (also spelled Madhusai) is a traditional large cardamom landrace from the Sikkim Himalayan region, less widely grown than the popular commercial cultivars but maintained by local farmers.
Origin & story
Indigenous to the eastern Himalayas, Madhusey is a farmer-maintained traditional selection and is counted among the roughly 18 documented large cardamom cultivars of the region. Research on the variety, including its disease-resistance capacity, was taken up at NCARP, Pakhribas, Dhankuta in Nepal.
How it grows
Madhusey is propagated traditionally through suckers by farmer communities. Reported elevation suitability varies between sources: some place it among upper-elevation cultivars, while Nepal trial notes describe it performing well at lower altitudes (roughly 700-1000 m), so its optimal elevation range is not settled.
Quality & character
The cultivar is reported to have red stem coloration, with a capsule size of about 72.5 mm noted in Nepal trial records.
Why it matters to buyers
Madhusey is a niche cultivar and is not among the most widely cultivated commercial varieties of Sikkim (such as Dzongu Golsey, Sawney, Seremna, Ramsey, Ramla and Varlangey). It may hold interest for buyers seeking traditional, farmer-maintained landraces rather than bulk-standardised lots.
