Varlangey in detail
Varlangey is a farmer-selected landrace that dominates large cardamom cultivation in Darjeeling and Kalimpong—covering roughly 90% of plantings—because of superior yields, large bold capsules, and early maturity.
Origin & story
An indigenous landrace of the Darjeeling and Sikkim hills, maintained by farmer selection over generations. It is the farmer-preferred cultivar for its productivity and easy harvest, and no formal breeding record or year of establishment is documented.
How it grows
Grown across a wide elevational range in the sub-Himalayan hills (study sites spanned roughly 1495–2069 m), with Varlangey performing well in yield traits above about 1515 m. Early maturity with flowering around May–June. In trials the plants were the tallest among local cultivars, averaging about 2.19 m. Suited to monsoon-fed hillside cultivation typical of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim.
Quality & character
Bold, large capsules—averaging about 24.98 mm long and 17.57 mm wide, with fresh weight around 57.59 g and dry weight around 7.67 g. It records the highest average capsule count per spike (13) among local cultivars, along with a high seed count. Good market colour and aroma.
Why it matters to buyers
Preferred by growers and traders for its large, bold capsules, which make harvesting easier, and for its good market colour and aroma. Growers should note its high susceptibility to leaf blight, with incidence reported around 15%—the highest among documented cultivars.
