Ramsey in detail
Ramsey thrives on steep upper Himalayan slopes where high elevation favours its dense, small capsules and strong aroma over sheer pod size.
Origin & story
An indigenous landrace of the Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalayas, maintained by hill farmers as a traditional cultivar suited to high-altitude terrain above 1600 m. Large cardamom was first domesticated by the Lepcha community of the eastern Himalayas, and Ramsey is one of the handful of cultivars long grown and selected by hill farmers in the region.
How it grows
Suited to elevations above 1600 m asl, Ramsey shows a positive correlation between altitude and yield: in a Sikkim study, plants above 1515 m produced significantly heavier dry capsules (6.88 g vs 4.48 g at mid-elevation) and more seeds per locule (14 vs 9) than mid-elevation plantings. Plant height 1.5-2.0 m with robust, abundant tillers. Flowers May-June; capsules ready October-November. Germination is slow, around 20-25% over 5-6 months from seed. The same study notes a downward shift in Ramsey cultivation toward mid-elevation sites, consistent with a warming climate. It is susceptible to the Tshirkay (mosaic) and Foorkay viral diseases, so clean planting material is important in disease-prone areas.
Quality & character
Small, hard, dense capsules with 25-40 seeds per capsule and a strong, clean aroma. Across the popular large cardamom varieties (including Ramsey), reported essential oil content is about 1.2-2.8%, dominated by 1,8-cineole (63.2-73.4%), with smaller amounts of alpha-pinene, beta-pinene and alpha-terpineol. Dry yield potential is broadly in the range of a few hundred kg/ha depending on site and elevation.
Why it matters to buyers
Ramsey capsules are smaller and denser than some other cultivars, suiting buyers who want concentrated aroma and quality over pod size. Sikkim large cardamom holds GI status, and Sikkim's position as an organic state can support a premium in export markets such as the Middle East, Europe and ASEAN. A clean flavour profile and high 1,8-cineole content appeal to premium spice traders and flavour buyers.
