IISR Rejatha in detail
Bold, medium-duration ginger with plump, round rhizomes and strong aromatic character. Its essential oil (2.36%) and oleoresin (6.34%) make it well suited to sliced ginger, candy, and oleoresin extraction.
Origin & story
Released by ICAR-IISR (Indian Institute of Spices Research), Calicut/Kozhikode, Kerala in 2001 as a selection from germplasm (Accession 35). It came out of the institute's ginger conservation and breeding work.
How it grows
A medium-duration cultivar. Reported average yield is 22.4 tonnes of fresh rhizome per hectare with about 23% dry recovery. Plant height averages 67.7 cm. Like most ginger, it does best in well-drained loam soils with good monsoon rainfall.
Quality & character
Rhizomes are plump, round, and bold. Fibre content is low at about 4%, with essential oil at 2.36% and oleoresin at 6.34%. The bold size and low fibre favour sliced and candied forms.
Why it matters to buyers
Value-added processors favour Rejatha for its essential oil and oleoresin content, which suits ginger candy, preserves, and oleoresin extraction. The low fibre means less waste and cleaner texture in sliced products. Reported dry recovery is around 23%, which helps when contracting fresh rhizome by expected dried yield.
