Kuruppampadi in detail
Kuruppampadi is a traditional Kerala ginger named after its locality of origin, and is preferred for dry ginger production.
Origin & story
Indigenous to the Kuruppampadi locality in Kerala, this cultivar emerged from farmer selection as a local landrace. Like other Kerala ginger varieties, it is named after the geographic area where it originated and developed through traditional cultivation.
How it grows
Kuruppampadi is well-suited to Kerala's wet-soil, high-humus conditions for dry ginger recovery. As with ginger generally, it is planted from around May with the pre-monsoon showers, in well-drained, friable loam rich in humus, and is propagated from seed rhizomes cut into pieces with good buds.
Quality & character
Kuruppampadi is recognised for quality characteristics that make it suitable for dry ginger production. The rhizomes yield dry ginger used for both culinary and industrial purposes.
Why it matters to buyers
As a Kerala dry-ginger cultivar, Kuruppampadi feeds into the state's established dry ginger trade. Kerala ginger is traditionally exported through grades such as "Cochin Ginger" and "Calicut Ginger," shipped via Cochin port.
