IISR Kedaram in detail
A 2004 IISR release bred for consistency and curcumin yield across variable Indian growing zones.
Origin & story
IISR Kedaram was released by the Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR), Kozhikode, Kerala, in 2004. It was developed through AFT selection and was bred for stability across diverse environments. Its name comes from the region associated with the selection work.
How it grows
Matures in around 215 days with fresh yields averaging about 29 tonnes per hectare and a dry yield of 5.28 tonnes per hectare. Adopted across Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and North Bengal. Shows consistent curcumin performance across environments, which helps growers outside traditional turmeric zones. Field tolerant to leaf blotch (Taphrina maculans). Produces bold, reddish-yellow rhizomes (mother rhizomes averaging about 116 g) with good secondary rhizome development.
Quality & character
Curcumin 5.70% and oleoresin around 14%, with a high dry yield of 5.28 t/ha. The strong curcumin and oleoresin levels support good natural colour and flavour.
Why it matters to buyers
Traders value IISR Kedaram for its consistent curcumin levels across lots, which helps in standardized spice mixes and concentrates. Its 5.70% curcumin baseline and field stability appeal to buyers serving processors and food markets that need reliable curcumin content. Bold rhizomes hold up well during cleaning and polishing. Its field tolerance to leaf blotch is a useful trait for growers in humid zones.
