Armoor in detail

Telangana's first turmeric variety to reach GI approval stage, Armoor is an Erra Guntur-type cultivar that has dominated Nizamabad's turmeric landscape for over ninety years.

Origin & story

Armoor turmeric originates from Armoor village and the surrounding mandals in Nizamabad district, Telangana, where it has been farmer-selected and grown as a traditional landrace for more than nine decades. In 2024-2025 the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai gave technical clearance to the GI application filed jointly by Armoor Farmers Producer Cooperative Society Limited (Manthani) and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society Limited (Armoor). It is the first turmeric variety from Telangana and the seventh nationally to reach the GI approval stage.

How it grows

Armoor turmeric is cultivated across the district's seven divisions and twenty-three mandals, and over eighty percent of Nizamabad turmeric is the Erra Guntur type that Armoor belongs to. The crop is grown under the region's semi-arid, monsoon-fed conditions. In a recent season around 9.59 lakh quintals reached the Nizamabad market. Telangana Horticultural University led the GI validation and documentation work for the variety.

Quality & character

Armoor fingers show vibrant colour, high quality and excellent dry recovery, traits the growers value. The variety is noted for high curcumin content and a distinctive aroma, attributed to the region's fertile soils. Nizamabad turmeric broadly carries around 1.5-2.5% curcumin under standard conditions, and the rhizomes are commercially desirable.

Why it matters to buyers

Nizamabad turmeric has strong global export demand, with the United States, UAE, Japan and the United Kingdom among India's main turmeric destinations, and high-curcumin Nizamabad material is sought for Japan's supplement sector. GI protection is expected to support premium pricing, better export access and farmer income. The National Turmeric Board, set up in January 2025 and headquartered in Nizamabad, oversees the sector. A curcumin testing facility has been installed at the Nizamabad market yard to help growers secure better prices.
