Suguna in detail
A Kerala-bred variety that delivers steady yields and clean rhizomes in 190 days, with moderate pest and disease tolerance that helped it gain farmer adoption in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
Origin & story
Suguna was released in 1991 by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Kozhikode, Kerala. It is a selection from germplasm accession PCT-13, collected in Andhra Pradesh, developed as part of IISR's work on short-duration turmeric lines.
How it grows
Short-duration crop: matures in 190 days. Average yield is 29.3 tonnes of fresh rhizomes per hectare, with a recorded potential of 60.3 tonnes/ha under good management. Dry recovery is 20.4%. It has been adopted in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh and is suited to well-draining soil.
Quality & character
Compact plant, around 107 cm tall. Rhizomes are thick and plump with reddish-yellow skin, and the variety is reported free from disease incidence in farmers' fields. Moderate tolerance to leaf blotch (Taphrina maculans) and rhizome rot (Pythium graminicolum). Curcumin content 4.9%, oleoresin 13.5%, essential oil 6.0%.
Why it matters to buyers
The 20.4% dry recovery and 4.9% curcumin make it a dependable choice for powder manufacturers. Moderate disease tolerance can mean fewer fungicide inputs on well-managed farms. The gap between average and potential yield rewards growers who can optimise inputs and spacing.
