IISR Suvarna in detail
IISR Suvarna is the institute's first turmeric release—a short-season, disease-tolerant variety from 1987 that traces back to Assam germplasm.
Origin & story
Released by ICAR-IISR in 1987, IISR Suvarna marked the institute's entry into turmeric variety development. It was derived from germplasm sourced from Assam (the PCT-8 line). It was one of the earlier scientific turmeric releases from the institute.
How it grows
A short-duration crop, typically mature in around 200 days. Like all turmeric, it prefers well-drained, friable soil rich in organic matter, and raised beds help prevent waterlogging and rhizome rot. It carries field tolerance to the common turmeric diseases of growing areas.
Quality & character
Deep-orange rhizomes with curcumin content around 4–5%, a medium curcumin profile for a released variety. Dry recovery runs approximately 21%, so fresh rhizomes yield roughly one part cured turmeric to about five parts fresh weight.
Why it matters to buyers
Field-tolerant to three diseases—rhizome rot, leaf blotch and leaf spot. The medium curcumin and dry recovery make it a practical trade variety rather than a premium curcumin type. Actual results depend on soil, water and season.
