ICRI-2 in detail
ICRI-2 is a Mysore-type cardamom developed at the Indian Cardamom Research Institute in the 1980s that combines tolerance to azhukal disease with solid yields suited to the higher-altitude cardamom zones of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Origin & story
ICRI-2 was released by the Indian Cardamom Research Institute (headquartered at Myladumpara, Idukki District, Kerala) in the 1980s through the institute's breeding programme for improved, high-yielding cardamom selections.
How it grows
ICRI-2 performs well in higher-altitude zones and under irrigated conditions. It is recommended for the cardamom hills of Vandanmedu and Nelliyampathy in Kerala, and Anamalai and Megamalai in Tamil Nadu. Like most cardamom, it grows under moderate shade in the tropical highland climate of these regions.
Quality & character
Mysore type with medium-long panicles and oblong, bold, parrot-green capsules. Yield potential is about 766 kg/ha.
Why it matters to buyers
ICRI-2 is tolerant to azhukal (capsule rot) disease, an advantage in Kerala's humid cardamom zones where the disease can cause crop loss. That tolerance, combined with good yields in disease-prone regions, has made it a dependable choice for growers in those areas.

Mysore stands tall and erect, reaching its best between 900–1200 metres on the wind-swept heights. And Vazhukka, a…
