ICRI-3 in detail

ICRI-3 is an early-maturing Malabar-type cardamom with oblong, bold, parrot-green capsules, released from ICRI's Regional Research Station at Sakleshpur, Karnataka, and suited to Karnataka's cardamom tracts.

Origin & story

ICRI-3 was released from the Indian Cardamom Research Institute's Regional Research Station at Sakleshpur in Hassan District, Karnataka. That station was set up in 1980, following ICRI's founding in 1978 as the research wing of the Spices Board. The variety is recommended for the Karnataka cardamom-growing tract.

How it grows

ICRI-3 is an early-maturing type and is described as tolerant to rhizome rot disease, a major constraint in cardamom. It is suited to the cardamom-growing tracts of Karnataka.

Quality & character

Capsules are oblong, bold, and parrot-green. The plants have non-pubescent leaves.

Why it matters to buyers

The rhizome rot tolerance and early maturity are useful where that disease is a problem, and the bold, parrot-green capsules are generally favoured in the market. ICRI's Sakleshpur station supports growers in the region with research and planting material.
