Mudigere-3 in detail
Mudigere-3 is a pest-tolerant Malabar cardamom bred at Karnataka's ZAHRS research station, selected for resistance to thrips and borers, the two insects that trouble many cardamom growers in the Western Ghats.
Origin & story
Released in the 1990s by the Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station (ZAHRS) of the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences (UAHS) at Mudigere, Karnataka. It is part of the Mudigere series of improved varieties developed at that station.
How it grows
A Malabar-type cardamom suited to the Western Ghats hill zones of Karnataka. Its thrips and borer tolerance make it practical for cardamom tracts where insect pressure is significant. General cardamom husbandry for the region applies to spacing, shade and irrigation.
Quality & character
Malabar type. Tolerant to cardamom thrips (Sciothrips cardamomi) and shoot/capsule borer (Conogethes punctiferalis), two major insect pests in Indian cardamom cultivation.
Why it matters to buyers
Growers in thrips- or borer-prone zones value the variety for reduced pest pressure, which can lower reliance on chemical sprays compared with susceptible types.

Mysore stands tall and erect, reaching its best between 900–1200 metres on the wind-swept heights. And Vazhukka, a…
