Njallani in detail

A farmer-developed cardamom that bears 120-160 capsules per panicle—several times the count of ordinary varieties—and now dominates Idukki's cardamom cultivation.

Origin & story

Sebastian Joseph, a farmer in Kattapana, Idukki, developed this variety through careful selection during the 1990s, working with his son Rejimon. They selected for larger capsules and higher panicle density. By the early 2000s their work was recognised by the National Innovation Foundation. What began as one farmer's careful observation has become one of India's most successful farmer-developed cardamom varieties, now widely adopted across Idukki.

How it grows

Njallani is grown in Idukki's cardamom zone and now dominates cultivation there. Panicles bear 120-160 capsules where ordinary varieties produce 30-35. As a Vazhukka-type selection, it is suited to the region's shaded, high-rainfall conditions. Like other cardamom, it is propagated vegetatively from healthy mother plants.

Quality & character

Capsules are noticeably larger than the standard Mysore type—roughly twice the size—with a bold shape that appeals to exporters and traders. The high capsule count per panicle (120-160) is its defining feature, reflecting its Vazhukka-type parentage.

Why it matters to buyers

Larger, bold capsules tend to command premium prices at auction and in the export market, where bold green pods are preferred. The variety's widespread adoption across Idukki means it is a common and readily sourced type. Its dominance has, however, narrowed the range of varieties grown in the region.

About cardamom

In Kerala's rolling spice gardens, cardamom isn't just one plant—it's three distinct botanical types, each with its own character. The Malabar type, with flowers drooping down like a skirt, thrives in the softer elevations of 600–1200 metres. Mysore stands tall and erect, reaching its best between 900–1200 metres on the wind-swept heights. And Vazhukka, a…
