Pachaikkai in detail

Pachaikkai is a farmer-selected bright green cardamom landrace from Tamil Nadu's lower elevations, prized for capsules that hold their colour for over a year.

Origin & story

L. Ramaiah set out to establish a cardamom plantation on his three acres in Theni district's Megamalai hills (750-1200 m elevation) from 1986, where he observed a superior plant with large, bright green capsules. His son Murugan helped propagate the variety, which the family named Pachaikkai (meaning green-coloured capsule in Tamil). Ramaiah received a Spices Board shield as best performing cardamom planter in 1999, and the variety won the 7th National Grassroots Innovation Award in 2013.

How it grows

Pachaikkai suits lower elevations (750-1200 m) in Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats, where it shows drought tolerance and is suited to areas where traditional varieties struggle. Ramaiah's practice: pits 2½' x 2½' x 2' filled with topsoil, compost, and lime; annual manuring with neem seed powder and compost during the rainy season. Plants begin yielding at about two and a half years, with maximum production from the third year onward. Dry yield recorded at 2000 kg/ha. Racemes per panicle: 26.57.

Quality & character

Bright green bold capsules with more seeds per pod than other varieties. Colour retention is exceptional: the green does not fade even after a year of storage, a major distinction from common varieties. Larger capsule size and a higher seed count per pod add to its appeal.

Why it matters to buyers

Commands a premium of Rs 100-150 per kg over standard cardamom due to colour, boldness, and seed count. Neighbouring farmers gradually adopted it over the years following its initial recognition.

About cardamom

In Kerala's rolling spice gardens, cardamom isn't just one plant—it's three distinct botanical types, each with its own character. The Malabar type, with flowers drooping down like a skirt, thrives in the softer elevations of 600–1200 metres. Mysore stands tall and erect, reaching its best between 900–1200 metres on the wind-swept heights. And Vazhukka, a…
