Wonder Cardamom in detail
A farmer-selected cardamom variety from Idukki, Kerala that tolerates heat and low rainfall, enabling cultivation in rubber plantations and rainfed areas where traditional cardamom struggles.
Origin & story
Discovered in 1992 in Pampadumpara, Idukki district, Kerala. Sabu Varghese's wife noticed an unusual plant with different traits during a walk across their farm, and Varghese went on to develop the variety through vegetative propagation between 1992 and 1999. He initially named it "Vanderkunnel" after his house before it became known as Wonder Cardamom. The National Innovation Foundation recognised it at the 4th National Grassroots Innovation Awards in 2007. Varghese later received Intellectual Property Rights protection under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act in 2015.
How it grows
Grows at lower altitudes and in drier conditions than traditional cardamom, tolerating high temperatures unsuitable for conventional varieties. Suited to intercropping with rubber plantations and rainfed cultivation. Requires shade and humidity for harvest. Yields approximately 3 kg per plant, with 30-50 tillers per clump and a robust, bushy growth habit with deep green foliage. Propagated vegetatively.
Quality & character
Branched panicles distinguish it from the simple panicles of traditional varieties, on a robust, bushy plant. It has a superior drying recovery compared with standard cardamom: about 1 kg of dried spice from 3.8 kg of fresh green cardamom, against the roughly 5 kg of green needed in conventional varieties.
Why it matters to buyers
Drought tolerance and low-altitude adaptation make it of interest to farmers wanting to grow cardamom in drier zones, rubber smallholdings and marginal land in Idukki and similar regions where water stress limits traditional cultivation. Its better drying ratio can mean less green weight handled per kilo of dried spice. The variety suits diversified plantation systems.
About cardamom
In Kerala's rolling spice gardens, cardamom isn't just one plant—it's three distinct botanical types, each with its own character. The Malabar type, with flowers drooping down like a skirt, thrives in the softer elevations of 600–1200 metres. Mysore stands tall and erect, reaching its best between 900–1200 metres on the wind-swept heights. And Vazhukka, a…
