IISR Alleppey Supreme in detail

IISR Alleppey Supreme is a high-oleoresin selection from ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, released in 2004. It has reddish-orange finger rhizomes and tolerance to leaf blotch, and is grown across Kerala's rainfed zones and irrigated tracts elsewhere in India.

Origin & story

Released by ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, Kerala in 2004 from an AFT selection within the traditional Alleppey turmeric type. It was selected for its curcumin and oleoresin content.

How it grows

Suited to Kerala under rainfed conditions and to irrigated cultivation in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and North Bengal. Crop duration is about 210 days. Yields around 5.3 dry tonnes/ha (potential fresh yield about 19.9 t/ha). Plants reach about 57 cm with roughly 3 tillers per clump; rhizomes weigh about 442 g per clump and are reddish-orange. Tolerant to leaf blotch disease (Taphrina maculans).

Quality & character

Reddish-orange finger rhizomes typical of the Alleppey type. Curcumin about 5.5%, oleoresin about 16%, and dry recovery about 19%. The high oleoresin makes it a useful type for extraction-based trade.

Why it matters to buyers

The high oleoresin content appeals to processors and exporters seeking material for extraction. Tolerance to leaf blotch can reduce crop loss in humid zones. Finger-type rhizomes are characteristic of the Alleppey trade.
