Agrifound Parvati-2 in detail
Agrifound Parvati-2 (G-408) is a newer long-day garlic from NHRDF, Nashik, released for higher hills and mid-elevation zones. It produces notably larger creamy-white bulbs and has shown superior yield to earlier check varieties in those areas.
Origin & story
It was released by NHRDF (National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation) in Nashik, the institute behind India's widely grown Agrifound and Yamuna Safed garlic series. It is a long-day type developed for temperate, higher-elevation zones rather than the short-day conditions of the plains.
How it grows
As a long-day variety, it is suited to cooler, higher-altitude zones such as the Himalayan states, where longer days and cool temperatures favour bulbing. Like all garlic, it is propagated from cloves and prefers well-drained, fertile soil with organic matter; it should be kept consistently moist through bulbing, with irrigation eased off before lifting to aid curing and storage.
Quality & character
Bigger creamy-white bulbs, roughly 5.0–6.0 cm in diameter, with 12–14 larger cloves per bulb. Total soluble solids measure about 37°B and dry matter about 39%, with pyruvic acid (linked to pungency) at around 23 μmol/g. The larger individual cloves suit whole-clove cooking.
Why it matters to buyers
Growers in the Himalayan zone have adopted it because its yield exceeds older check standards such as G-41, G-282 and G-189. The larger cloves can suit specialty channels where whole-clove presentation matters. Seed is available through NHRDF.
About garlic
India grows both short-day and long-day garlic varieties suited to its diverse agro-climates, from the tropical Deccan to the Himalayan foothills. The National Horticultural Research Development Foundation (NHRDF) in Nashik has released the widely planted Yamuna Safed series from southern germplasm, while the Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research (DOGR)…
