Ooty-1 in detail

White hill-adapted garlic released by TNAU in 1991, bred for cooler elevations and noted for resistance to thrips and tip-drying.

Origin & story

Ooty-1 was released in 1991 by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's Horticultural Research Station (HRS) at Ooty in the Nilgiris. The variety was developed as a selection from germplasm held at the station.

How it grows

Bred for hilly Tamil Nadu and southern high-altitude regions. The variety matures in 120-130 days. In the hills it is grown in two seasons, June-July and October-November. The TNAU recommendation for garlic is 40:75:75 kg NPK per hectare as basal application, along with organic manures.

Quality & character

Dull-white bulbs averaging 30-40 grammes with 22-25 cloves per bulb. Matures in 120-130 days. Yields about 17 tonnes per hectare.

Why it matters to buyers

Growers value Ooty-1 for its resistance to thrips and tip-drying, both common garlic quality problems. As a hill-adapted white variety with bulbs in the 30-40 g range, it suits cooler southern elevations.
