Yamuna Safed-5 in detail

A creamy-white processing garlic from NHRDF with uniform cloves and high soluble solids, suited to multiple Indian growing zones.

Origin & story

Yamuna Safed-5 (G-189) is one of the garlic varieties developed and released by NHRDF (National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation), based in Nashik, for commercial cultivation across several Indian zones. Detailed breeding records (parentage, selection method, and release year) were not available in the sources checked.

How it grows

Yamuna Safed-5 is notified for Zone III (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Punjab), Zone IV, and Zone VI (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh). Crop duration is about 140-160 days with a yield of roughly 150-180 quintals per hectare. The recommended seed rate is 500-600 kg/ha, with around 50 tonnes of farmyard manure and NPK at 40:75:75 kg/ha, plus a neem cake application.

Quality & character

Bulbs are creamy-white, 4.5-5 cm in diameter, compact, with 22-30 cloves per bulb. Dry matter is about 44%, total soluble solids 42 degrees Brix, and pyruvic acid around 26 micromol/g. Clove uniformity is good, which helps processing.

Why it matters to buyers

G-189 is recommended for processing and dehydration thanks to its dry-matter retention, making it a fit for garlic powder, flakes, and similar value-added products. Its high dry matter (44%) is a point in its favour for dehydration. The variety is also suited to domestic use, and its adaptability across several zones can help spread sourcing for bulk buyers.
