CITH-G-1 in detail

CITH-G-1 is a large-clove long-day garlic bred for Himalayan cultivation, valued in Indian markets for its clove size and aromatic profile.

Origin & story

CITH-G-1 was developed by the ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH), Srinagar, dating to 2016. It came out of CITH's work on long-day garlic types suited to temperate hill zones, and was identified for agroclimatic Zone I covering Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

How it grows

CITH-G-1 is a long-day type suited to temperate and high-altitude regions of the Himalayan zone. It matures in 210-245 days depending on altitude and planting time, with harvesting from late June to the first week of July. It was identified for agroclimatic Zone I (Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh) and is reported to show resistance to major foliar diseases.

Quality & character

Bulbs are large and intact, with substantial cloves around 4.5 grams each, well above standard garlic, and a rich aroma.

Why it matters to buyers

Traders and consumers favour CITH-G-1 for its bulb size, clove quality, and aroma. The late-June to early-July harvest window falls when plains-grown garlic supply is minimal, allowing premium pricing during the lean period. The variety has a reported yield potential of 474.36 quintals per hectare.
