Bhima Omkar in detail
Bhima Omkar is a short-day white garlic released by ICAR's DOGR (Pune) that performs reliably in dry northern regions of India.
Origin & story
Bhima Omkar was developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research through the Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research (DOGR), Pune. It is a short-day cultivar recommended for cultivation in Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
How it grows
Recommended for Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan, Bhima Omkar matures in about 120-135 days and yields roughly 8-14 tonnes per hectare. Its short-day habit suits northern and central Indian agro-climates. Like most garlic, it does best with cool weather during vegetative growth and bulb development followed by warm, dry conditions at maturity. DOGR researchers have reported meristem culture for producing virus-free planting stock in this cultivar.
Quality & character
Medium-sized, compact white bulbs with white flesh. Characterisation studies record on the order of 22 cloves per bulb, an equatorial bulb diameter of about 4.5 cm, and total soluble solids near 38 degrees Brix.
Why it matters to buyers
A short-day variety suited to semi-arid northern Indian conditions, where growers report stable yields. Thrips management is advisable, as the variety is reported to be susceptible to thrips in the field.
