Agrifound White in detail
Agrifound White (G-41), released in 1989 by NHRDF Nashik, is a compact silvery-white garlic with good dry-matter content and shelf life, widely used in India's export supply chain but suited only to low-humidity growing regions.
Origin & story
Agrifound White (G-41) was the first garlic variety released by the National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF) at Nashik, in 1989. It was developed through mass selection from local germplasm collected at Biharsharif, Bihar.
How it grows
The variety matures in about 140-150 days and yields around 130 quintals per hectare. It is notified for Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. It is susceptible to fungal foliar diseases such as purple blotch (Alternaria porri) and stemphylium blight (Stemphylium vesicarium), which are favoured by humid conditions, so it does best in regions with dry, low-humidity weather during the growing season. A foliar spray of mancozeb (0.25%) is a standard measure when these diseases appear.
Quality & character
Bulbs are compact, silvery white with creamy flesh, 3.5-4.5 cm in diameter. Each bulb typically carries 20-25 cloves, which are bigger and elongated. Reported composition includes about 41 degrees Brix total soluble solids, 42-43% dry matter, and 27 micromole/g pyruvic acid - traits associated with good shelf life and processing suitability.
Why it matters to buyers
The variety is a reliable good-storing type suited to processing and dehydration (flakes, powder, dried). Its high dry-matter content supports processing yield, and the pyruvic acid level reflects strong pungency. Buyers and processors value it for consistent bulb uniformity and appearance. Growers should avoid high-rainfall, humid zones; the variety's disease susceptibility makes it a poor fit for the northern plains during wet seasons, limiting its range despite its otherwise strong commercial attributes.
About garlic
India grows both short-day and long-day garlic varieties suited to its diverse agro-climates, from the tropical Deccan to the Himalayan foothills. The National Horticultural Research Development Foundation (NHRDF) in Nashik has released the widely planted Yamuna Safed series from southern germplasm, while the Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research (DOGR)…
