A large, creamy-white garlic selected from Dindigul stock by NHRDF for commercial and export markets, suited to India's northern and central garlic-growing regions.

Origin & story

Developed by selection from a local garlic collection obtained from Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, in 1990 by the National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF), based in Nashik. It has been notified by the Government of India for commercial cultivation.

How it grows

Notified for cultivation in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. A short-day type maturing in roughly 120-140 days. Seed rate around 500-600 kg/ha. Responds to NPK at about 40:75:75 kg/ha along with farmyard manure, and needs regular irrigation (commonly at weekly intervals) through the growing period.

Quality & character

Creamy-white bulbs about 4.5-5.5 cm in diameter, with 15-16 cloves per bulb and clove diameter of roughly 1.2-1.5 cm. TSS around 38-40, with dry matter in the 39-43% range.

Why it matters to buyers

An export-oriented variety. Its large, fairly uniform bulbs and cloves suit export-grade requirements. Reported yields are about 175-200 quintals per hectare (roughly 10-12 tonnes/ha) under good management.
